Joy is not frivolous. Pleasure is not a distraction. In a world that demands we shrink, harden, comply…choosing sweetness, color, and abundance can be its own kind of refusal.

This painting is part of my ongoing series of oversized, glittering still lifes—food scaled up until it becomes monumental. A donut becomes a symbol: of appetite, of indulgence, of taking up space.
The things we’re told are unserious—sprinkles, frosting, softness, delight—are often the very things that keep us human. They are coded as feminine, trivial, excessive. I want to treat them as worthy of reverence.
Here, sweetness isn’t decoration. It’s declaration.
A reminder that joy can be defiant. That beauty can be bold. That pleasure is something we can choose, even when the world feels determined to harden us.
